Snowier winters extend autumn availability of high‐quality forage for caribou in Arctic Alaska

چکیده

Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) rely on the short Arctic growing season to restore body condition, support demands of lactation, and prepare for long arctic winter, making them susceptible even small changes in forage availability or quality. Body condition summer autumn is linked winter survival rates fecundity cows, critical factors productivity caribou populations. Climate change predictions warmer wetter northern winters suggest increased snowfall over Alaska's North Slope, which has recently been verified between 1995 2017. However, a comprehensive analysis how deeper snow will affect quality absent across Alaska. In this study, we quantify depth alters seasonality using long-term (24 yr) International Tundra Experiment manipulation evaluate climate scenarios may tussock tundra systems Deeper prior leads increases leaf N digestible protein (DP) deciduous shrubs (Salix spp. Betula spp.) graminoids (Carex Eriophorum spp.), but not evergreen dwarf (Rhododendron Vaccinium spp.). Dry matter digestibility varied among species with differences (<5%) associated depth. Most striking was discovery that duration DP levels above minimum threshold gain by as much 25 d Salix pulchra 6–9 nana Carex bigelowii late early autumn. Consequently, provide an extended window opportunity foraging accumulation lean mass fat reserves promote successful calving following spring potentially improve

Metagenomic Survey for Viruses in Western Arctic Caribou, Alaska, through Iterative Assembly of Taxonomic Units

Pathogen surveillance in animals does not provide a sufficient level of vigilance because it is generally confined to surveillance of pathogens with known economic impact in domestic animals and practically nonexistent in wildlife species. As most (re-)emerging viral infections originate from animal sources, it is important to obtain insight into viral pathogens present in the wildlife reservoi...

Anomalou s Unfrozen Zone Caribou Peak, Alaska

The field studies were done with the assistance of Allen Delaney, while Bruce Brockett provided valuable information on the borehole unfrozen zone. Dr. Patrick Black conducted the NMR analysis and Alan Hewitt conducted the ion chromatography analysis. Paul Sellmann and Lawrence Gatto provided useful technical reviews of the report manuscript. The authors thank all of the above individuals, who ...

Factors controlling Arctic denitrification in cold winters of the 1990s

Denitrification of the Arctic winter stratosphere has been calculated using a 3-D microphysical model for the winters 1994/95, 1995/96, 1996/97 and 1999/2000. Denitrification is assumed to occur through the sedimentation of low number concentrations of large nitric acid trihydrate (NAT) particles (as inferred by e.g. Fahey et al., 2001). We examine whether the meteorological conditions that all...

Dynamic Responses of Calving Caribou to Oilfields in Northern Alaska

Past research has suggested that during the calving period, caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in Arctic Alaska generally avoid areas within 1 km of oilfield roads with traffic. However, avoidance is not absolute, and caribou may habituate to infrastructure (e.g., buildings, roads, well pads) and human activity. We conducted road-based surveys of caribou in oilfields on Alaska’s Arctic Coastal Plain d...

Normalized Difference Vegetation Index as an Estimator for Abundance and Quality of Avian Herbivore Forage in Arctic Alaska

Tools that can monitor biomass and nutritional quality of forage plants are needed to understand how arctic herbivores may respond to the rapidly changing environment at high latitudes. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has been widely used to assess changes in abundance and distribution of terrestrial vegetative communities. However, the efficacy of NDVI to measure seasonal cha...
